Rejuvenating the space between a nightlife mainstay and bustling London street.

OVERVIEW

The goal was to create a landmark elevating the pedestrianised space on Venn Street in Clapham and position Venn St. Records as a multifaceted entertainment space. Prior to the mural, the facade read as an uninspired and overwhelming black block. The mural had to work day and night, command attention from the road, and reflect the vibrancy of the street itself—this led towards an eye-catching, rich and dynamic direction. While initial designs leaned into literal musical motifs (famous musicans, records, musical notes), a story driven and expansive canvas was the eventual outcome. The direction needed to be stylistically referential to the Records Bars branding without alienating the public street experience.

In selecting Sr. X from the Global Street Art network, I was attracted to his use of forced perspective and engagement with architectural surfaces, which was crucial for navigating the complex and detailed facade. His distinct gritty, graphic style (resembling Frank Miller’s comics) struck the perfect balance of playful storytelling and a subversive edge.

SR. X WORK REFERENCES

Texture & Line Weighting

The detailed and rougher elements especially the angular lines seen here in Sr. X piece “Lume” includes varied and sharp line weighting, negative space and small deliberate imperfections. These elements resemble torn edges and ink bleeds found in old print media, which adorn the walls in Venn St. Records.

Playfulness with Space

Playful elements, embracing colour and contrast and opportunities to incorporate forced perspective elements favoured our canvas. This would not only be interesting from a client point of view but also a strong visual hook when looking down Venn Street when passing by on Clapham High Street. As the canvas facade at Venn St. records is quite detailed with recesses, shutters and lighting fixtures, Sr. X. would naturally play with the space in his style.
